  • Overview

    Provide support to education faculty in areas of student learning and provide support within both the educational and residential setting with student resident supervision and safety.


    1. Provide educational assistance to clients within a classroom setting.

    2. Provide client supervision and mentorship.

    3. Ensure student resident safety and collaborate with co-workers to maintain an environment that is positive, respectful, clean, and safe.

    4. Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required by Nexus. Understand and support the Nexus philosophy and treatment modalities.

    5. Uphold Nexus policy and procedures regarding student resident confidentiality

    6. Perform other responsibilities, tasks and projects as needed.


    Knowledge, Skills and Personal Attributes

    • Strive to gain an understanding of basic child and adolescent development principles, in an effort to model and reinforce fundamentals of positive youth development.
    • Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills to generate required documentation and reporting that is legible and articulate, and to interface effectively with student resident population and staff within both the school and residential setting.
    • Exhibit ability to effectively carry out lesson plans in teachers’ short-term absence and to effectively provide educational assistance to students on assigned subject materials, projects and assignments.
    • Exhibit a spirit of cooperation among co-workers with the ultimate goal of achieving the best learning environment possible for our students while insuring appropriate supervision and safety.
    • Demonstrate the ability to be highly flexible and easily adjust to meeting changing work needs and demands, and willingly provide direction and/or assistance to coworkers when needed.
    • Display ethical conduct and professionalism at all times, with particular emphasis on maintaining a healthy relationship and appropriate boundaries with student/residents to ensure a positive, effective learning environment.
    • Adhere to department procedures regarding punctuality and attendance and exhibit flexibility and cooperation with scheduling and rotation needs.
    • Continually seek knowledge of and an understanding of differences in gender, race, age, culture, ethnicity, class religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability.
    • Remain current on all required training and certifications.

    Education, Credentials and Experience

    • Must meet all criteria for an approved Paraprofessional Certification, or equivalent, as set forth by the state in which performing Teaching Assistant duties; In IL, for ISBE, an equivalent would be an Associate’s degree (or higher) at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, with evidence of an official transcript.
    • Minimum 21 years of age.


    Physical Demands

    • Ability to assist in physical interventions and restraints of student residents.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted and up to 100 lbs with assistance.
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (2-4 hours).
    • Ability to twist, bend, and stretch in a manner conducive to the execution of daily activities within a residential school setting.
